shooter to authorities, which they had done, and the fbi in a sunday tweet for being distracted by the russia probe. the sum total of the president s response is that it s been disjointed at best. for the opportunity he has to do something big on guns is undeniable. axios writing, quote, president trump has a rare political super power. he can get republicans to do what seems like the impossible. he used this super power to soften their opposition to vladimir putin, to instantly stir their distrust of the fbi and embrace trillion dollar deficits. every few months, friends, family and advisors fantasize trump will tap into his super powers a force for good to pass a big infrastructure bill, fight global warming, strike an epic immigration deal. now they dream of new gun controls to protect schools, kids and the innocent. he could, but he almost certainly won t. to help us understand where the president stands this hour, some of our favorite reporters and guests. white house reporters as
about how it pressured and pushed back against some of her stories. jenna: we ll look forward to that. big show coming up, howard. we re looking forward to it. thanks. jenna: thank you. eric: looking forward to that interview. well, the good old-fashioned food pyramid, remember that? it s soon going to have a makeover. next year the government will release new dietary guidelines, and some of the changes have experts scratching their heads. one of the changes would be to promote food that they claim have a smaller carbon footprint to help fight global warming. doug mckelway live in washington with more on this. i guess if we were what we eat, what we eat can help the climate, they claim? reporter: i guess you could say that, eric. there is no doubt america is becoming fatter, there s an epidemic of heart disease and diabetes is a ticking time bomb that s going to cost our society a lot of money to treat. and with the government now largely in control of health care, it s no surprise
the sequester is getting something done. it is just a dumb thing to get done, a dumb thing to do. this is the part of the show i get to tell you about anything i want to tell you. i want to tell you about a better way to do it. in fact, 15 ways to do it. do we have the clock? okay, the hamilton project is a think tank here in washington. and they asked experts to make the policies to reach two goals. they make the economy better, by growing the economy or protecting the environment or something. but here are my top five of the 15. number one, a carbon tax, and hamilton suggested we use money on a loot of it to lower the corporate tax rate, give money back to households and then cut the corporate tax result to 15 billion, we can do that by helping us fight global warming which is a far larger threat.
back to households and then cut the corporate tax result to 15 billion, we can do that by helping us fight global warming which is a far larger threat. and number two, get medicare to stop paying providers for every single thing they do, and begin paying them for each patient. they can keep the leftover money as profit. it forces them to think about how to treat patients as opposed to giving out services. number three, all the deductions, they do more for rich people. make them credits that everybody who pays income taxes can get. that makes it more fair and progressive. it raises $2.7 trillion, we can use most of that money to lower tax rates. number four, we used to fund infrastructure with the gas tax. that is broken down, but hamilton has a good idea, make people pay more for driving on the congested roads, that way we fight traffic at the same time we fight infrastructure. and number fight, the sequester cuts deep into medicare but does it in a really dumb way, i m sorry, defense.
