here to put eyes on some kind of wreckage down there. and ultimately when you reach the recover part, they may bring in a robot, that can collect pieces. jake, this was used in the air france crash to get some of the debris there. and tom, one of the pieces of equipment you just described, the sonobuoy that picked up the fifth ping that authorities say was unlikely to be connected to flight 370 black boxes. how would it pick up a false positive? well, there are a lot of different ways that it would pick up something not there. but there is confusion on to listening devices. out on the ocean, about a half mile down is something called the sound fixing ranging and layer. basically, water where sound moves less quickly where it does elsewhere in the water. sound under water goes about four times as fast as it does in the air. so when it is traveling as it does here and hits the slower
and then there was this. is. we have very much narrowed down the search area and we are very confident that the signals that we are detecting are from the black box. that is unwavering confidence despite the fact that the men heading u ining up the search te has been no major head way made in the search. it turns out it likely was not a ping at all.
the australian maritime safety authority and we have been doing this with the joint agency task forces. the drift models from the currents, they will look at satellite imagery and taking the data from the recent ping and joining those dots. so we re confident that we re in the right here, it s just that it s still a very large area, a very challenging search for us and it s day 36, as you said, and still no information. so we ll keep searching. well, you do have some information. you have four pings that are believed the prime minister of australia says is believed to have come from one of the two black boxes. the fifth ping, apparently, turned out to be a false alarm. are you convinced that the fourth pings are the real deal? well, i don t have specific information and access to the analysis around those pings.
kilometers where this black box may be lying. right, how many respect help me understand this. with each ping they are able to triangulate and calculate to narrow it down. why is it proving so difficult to hear theapins again? we heard the pings again? we heard the fifth ping, to use the parlance that we re employing, is unlikely to have been coming from any black box. why are they having problems repeating that? well, as we know, they transmit at a pretty close frequency. the fifth one probably is not coming it s coming from a different frequency. that s why they re saying it s not coming from a black box. the hard part is to be able to triangulate and it should be pinging all the time, we know. could be two reasons that we re not finding that continuously.
