Description This book is the first of three volumes, which altogether will comprise the first catalogue of the holdings of the J. Paul Getty Museum. It contains all the paintings belonging to the museum as of October, 1971, plus a few of the more important acquisitions made before the manuscript was submitted to the printer five months later. We are putting on paper what we own and what we have so far learned about it.
For the same reasons that one cannot at present sum up the growth of the collection, it is impossible to fully acknowledge here the contribution and generosity of the man who continues to make it all possible. Histories of working motherhood, the children of the Holocaust, the destruction of knowledge, and the leader of the Haitian Revolution are some of the topics that feature in the shortlist for the 2021 Wolfson History Prize. The prize recognises the best historical non-fiction titles from the past year.

“This year’s shortlist shows us that, despite the unprecedented challenges of the past year, the diversity and quality of history writing in the UK continues to endure,” said Chair of the judges and President of the British Academy, David Cannadine, who also lauded “the commitment of their authors to uncover some of the lesser-known narratives of the past”.
