Nearly a month after the epic final of the World Cup in Qatar, football's top governing body, FIFA has opened a disciplinary proceeding against Argentina for 'offensive behaviour'. In a statement on Friday, FIFA said the Argentine squad had potentially breached the rules, particularly article 11 (Offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play) and article 12 (misconduct of players and officials) in the aftermath of the final.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino accused those opposed to altering the frequency of the World Cup to every two years of being scared of change and wanting to keep their elevated status in the game as Africa on Friday backed the plans.
In a veiled dig at confederations in Europe and South America, who have come out against the plan to change the current four-year-cycle, Infantino said they did not want things to change because they were at the top of the sport.
The International Olympic Committee said it has concerns about FIFA's push for soccer World Cups every two years. Though IOC President Thomas Bach said last month we will not interfere in this discussion, his organization stepped in on Saturday after meeting in Athens to detail objections it shared with soccer stakeholders.
