Most concerning was the ankle ligament damage sustained in a 0-0 draw with Southampton in December, with Jurgen Klopp watching on that day at Kirkby as he was helped off the pitch at half-time.

Clarkson was caught in possession near his own box and Hughes produced a fine save to prevent the opener, gathering the ball off a touch from his own midfielder.

Owen Beck, who had previously provided two assists from left-back for Joe Hardy and Tony Gallacher, then netted the winner with a fantastic, right-footed finish.
