the air or live long on surfaces and peep don t typically spread it until they are sick. really sick. when that s the case, they re not up walking around on the busy streets. down in bed. in hospitals or worse. even the dead are highly contagious. the story, always the same. reporter: this doctor from the cdc helped trace ebola outbreaks for 30er yaos. years. it s the people dealing with regular patient not thinking of ebo ebola. it only take as small amount of the virus anywhere on your skin. nothing gets in. nothing gets out. tim is one of the doctors without boarders. he s from canada. he comes into these settings for weeks at a time. he is not married, has no children. that would be a job liability, he tells me.
reporter: well, john, just look at the weather and you can see the challenges that the search-and-rescue crews are going through. there s been wind and rain and strong currents, so the families are very anxious, they re desperate for information about what has happened to their loved ones. we have just learned that the ferry company s president has been hospitalized after collapsing from shock and stress today, and also, the ferry captain spoke out publicly, apologizing, saying i am so sorry. i am at a loss for words. but that apology means very little to the parents of these high school students and the loved ones of the other passengers. we spoke with one father whose son is a high school student who was on this field trip headed to the resort i did of jeju island for a four-day holiday, and this father says much more needs to be done in the search-and-rescue effort. translator: the civilian team went out there, but the tides
made it too dangerous, so they came back. then the government rescuers say it s too dangerous for them, too. shouldn t i be angry at that? if the government cares for our people, please rescue our families and our children. reporter: and the president of south korea says she cares and she just met with the families, saying she promises to put more resources into this search-and-rescue operation. now, the big question is how exactly did this happen? how could this ferry, in very good weather, suddenly sink? we do know that the survivors from the ferry and other passengers had said that they heard a loud thump, a big bump, and that s when the ferry started lilting. well, the news agency here in south korea is reporting that the ferry captain had made a very sharp turn and that possibly the cargo on the bottom level could have shifted and caused this ferry to sink. we do know that there were more than 1,000 containers at the bottom level of the ferry, as
who can help fill in some of the information for us here. captain jim staples, who has been a merchant marine, ship captain for 20 years and personally sailed those same waters off south korea and retired coast guard thad allen is with us as well. you heard that ferry captain say he is at a loss for words. we heard this captain ordered people to stay put once the boat got into trouble. was that the right call? obviously we know now it definitely wasn t. when the captain realized initially he had a great loss of stability on that vessel and there was no way to right the vessel, he should have commanded everybody to get to an evacuation spot immediately to get to life rafts and evacuate that vessel. the time loss having these people stay inside the vessel was precious time that could have been gained if he told people to immediately evacuate. the situation was dire from the beginning. it sounds like he had a stability problem.
them, whatever that means. the ferry captain who unwittingly brought a mass murderer to an island s camp in nor way sets killer was cooperative on the boat ride over. he killed 18 people on a bombing last july and then made it to that summer camp where he slaughtered 69 others. most of them were but teenagers. the killer dressed as a policemen for the ferry trip for the island camp. today the captain of that ferry agreed to cover up his gun so it wouldn t scare anybody. when they arrived at the island the gunman pulled up that gun and started shooting. ferry captain s girlfriend who you see here was the first one to die. locked up for four to five days in a cell with no windows, no food, no water, no toilet. and charged with nothing. next, the student who says it happened to him here in the united states. says he almost went crazy talking to imaginary cartoon characters. and nearly died.
