April 22, 2021 12:22 I’m not deaf. I’m not a drummer. Yet, Darius Marder’s Sound of Metal feels like a film made for me and I know it will stick with me forever. The film is a character study about drummer Ruben Stone (Riz Ahmed), who loses his hearing and is faced with.
When I was young and foolish, I worked too hard. Twelve-hour days, occasional all-nighters, an incipient ulcer, a neglected family. What was I thinking?
I blame my boss, Max Weber. He wasnât my real boss, of course, but rather the early-20th century sociologist, economist and historian whose thinking inspired my heedless striving.
Weber coined the term âProtestant work ethic,â a heavily Calvinist distillation of longstanding religious beliefs that work is inherently rewarding, in this life and the next. Convincing the masses that work had value beyond wages, he suggested, was essential to the rise of capitalism.
Iâve been thinking about Weber lately. Republican governors in five states are ending the COVID-19 rescue planâs $300 supplemental unemployment benefit. Another nine mostly GOP-run states â including Massachusetts as of Thursday â are imposing work-search requirements for that weekly payment.
