PORT ORCHARD Design plans by Rice Fergus Miller are underway as the property acquisition phase wraps up for the South Kitsap Community Event Center. Some initial design concepts were presented to the Port Orchard City Council on Tuesday.
Port Orchard Mayor Rob Putaansuu says it will be at least three to five years before construction on the community center begins. The goal for 2021 is to complete design and acquire real estate, he said.
The community center will be at the site of the current Kitsap Bank building, at 619 Bay St. The bank will be rebuilt before the community center can be built. City officials hope the events center will be both a community gathering place and a boost to Port Orchard’s economy.

Bainbridge Chamber names new leader
An island resident and business owner has been named the new President and CEO of the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce, the organization announced last week.
Stefan Goldby, 47, owner of Chemistry Productions, a marketing and business consultancy, has lived on Bainbridge with his wife and children since 2015. He has been involved in recent chamber initiatives like the online Bainbridge General Store and Bainbridge Strong campaign to support businesses during the pandemic. He takes over for interim CEO Kevin Dwyer, who served in that capacity since last May.
The Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce has more than 500 member businesses and organizations and also operates a sub-agency of the Department of Licensing, where area residents can renew auto, truck, boat trailer and other licenses or complete title transfers.
