51 ECOWAS Nationals Arrested At Asikuma Inland Checkpoint

  Officers of the Volta Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service on Wednesday intercepted a bus with illegal immigrants from Benin and Togo at the Asikuma Inland Checkpoint in the Volta Region. The 51 ECOWAS nationals, included 49 Beninese and two Togolese, who were travelling on board a Hyundai vehicle with registration number AW9955-19. Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Philip Essuman, Commander of the checkpoint, in a release copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the suspects were arrested after scrutiny during a routine stop and search at the checkpoint. He said they were suspected to have gained entry into the country illegally from neighbouring Togo, using unapproved routes.

Immigration arrests 119 ECOWAS nationals at Sogakope LISTEN 1 Some 119 Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) nationals have been arrested for entering Ghana through unapproved routes. The illegal travellers included 116 males and three females, comprising 67 Nigerians, 35 Nigeriens, nine Togolese, four Beninese, three Ivoirians and a Ghanaian. They intended going to Ghana s capital, Accra, and to neighbouring Ivory Coast to visit friends and relatives. A communiqué issued by Assistant Inspector Felix Klu Adjei of Public Affairs, Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Volta Region and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the suspects were intercepted around 0615 hours on January 23, at the Sogakope Inland Check-Point in the South Tongu District.
