once the old cap is removed, we re going to be free-flowing about 5,000 gallons per minute of oil, at least for a couple of days until the new cap is put on. but this seems to be the best solution we have at this time, and in all probability, it will work. so you say this is kind of like a mini volcano, the amount of oil that will continue to gush, and if it is gushing at such a great velocity it would seem to me very difficult to put a new cap on top of that. how does the placement of that cap compete with the velocity of the oil? well, basically they ll winch it down using a block and tackle system, that s my understanding of it, and that s about the only way to do it, an rov would be completely unstable in that operation, so it would take winching it down on top of the pipe. as i said, we re going to be blowing a tremendous amount of oil at a tremendous pressure, so it s very unusual and it s something that s never been tried before and at a depth of a mile below the s
3:00. a new trend by popular vampire shows, teens biting each other. you are in the cnn news room where the news unfolds live. i m fredericka whitfield. day 82 of the oil disaster. right now, take a look at this live under water picture of the spewing well head. anytime now, bp is expected to begin removing the containment cap on the well so they can actually replace it with a tighter cap that could cut off nearly all of that spewing oil. it s a very complicated process. it will be several days before the new cap is actually in place according to bp. earlier on cnn kate baldwin asked richard charter about the latest endeavor. this particular device they are going to install, i understand, is called top hat number ten. not that it s the tenth thing they have tried, but they have tried quite a few things. this is a ceiling cap that will replace the existing cap and the existing cap as we know can recover about 23,000 barrel as day. the new cap would increase that to 50,000 ba
