Royal Ascot style guide 2021: this year it’s all about wearing sustainable secondhand pieces and charity shop finds Chloe Street Royal Ascot is not only a celebration of the best in racing, but also a major sartorial showcase, awash with amazing occasionwear and magnificent millinery. After a year in hibernation, the fashion at this year’s event is set to be bigger and better than ever. After the 2020 event took place behind closed doors (with spectators encouraged to share their Ascot outfits on Instagram from home), this year’s event, which will take place Tuesday 15 - Saturday 19 June, plans to welcome racegoers once again, provided government plans for easing restrictions remain on track. Capacity this year will be reduced to between 4,000 and 10,000 a day (down from 70,000) and only the Royal and Queen Anne enclosures will be open.

Top hat, tie and face mask: the new must-have in the Royal Ascot dress code

It will be the society event that kickstarts the summer season after a year of lockdowns. As such, the annual Royal Ascot style guide heralds the arrival of a new fashion accessory that racegoers are urged to consider with great care: the face mask. The guide states that face masks must be worn at this year’s event, as per Covid-19 protocols. But while event organisers insist that attendees opting for the common or garden disposable surgical blue masks will not be refused entry, they are encouraged to go for something more elegant. “It is requested that these are of a tasteful nature and selected with the same considerations in mind as when choosing a hat, waistcoat or tie,” the guide states.
