Florida issues a $110,000 fine and orders a resort to restore the protected mangroves that were destroyed last spring. Rhode Islander Michael Mota was questioned as the owner's representative; the fine is about a third what Mota and his business partner were paid as advisors to the resort. Mota had blamed the damage on on a tornado the National Weather Service said did not exist.
Rhode Island businessman Michael Mota told Florida Department of Environmental Protection investigators in May that he represented the resort’s owner. He blamed the cut trees on storm damage.
