Although I left the Catholic Church many years ago, I have a great deal of respect for members of the Society of Jesus Jesuit priests and brothers. As one of their missions is education, Jesuits have a reputation for being first-rate scholars who take on controversial issues regarding the Catholic Church. Pope Francis is a Jesuit, the first pontiff from the Society of Jesus. Writing in America The Jesuit Review magazine, Fr. James Martin posits that some Catholic clergy helped give rise to mob violence at the U.S. Capitol in January. He provides numerous examples of vitriolic anti-Joe Biden-Democratic Party YouTube presentations, sermons, writings and remarks by Roman Catholic clergy.
Bishops have already created a working group to deal with the “difficult” situation of his presidency. Priests from Maryland to Fort Worth have preached that the president-elect isn’t even really a Catholic. But to many millions of Catholics who voted for him, Joe Biden and his focus on healing are a compassionate, Pope Francis-like model of their faith.
Catholics’ views on Biden seem to serve as a proxy for what kinds of Catholicism they think most urgently needs to be advanced. Should it be more focused on qualities like engagement and empathy or on purifying doctrine? Is it as interested in Catholic teachings on poverty, refugees and the environment as those on sexuality and reproduction, or should it continue to place abortion law above all?
congratulations. welcome back to hardball. that was outgoing chair donna brazile announcing the new leader of the democratic national committee over the weekend. former labor secretary tom perez, first latino leader of the democratic national committee. the contest for party chair turned into a proxy war you might see between the obama/clinton wing represented by mr. perez and the bernie sanders wing which backed keith ellison. politico reported ed meeks was reportedly threatened by supporters of ellison and sanders with a primary challenge if he backed anyone else. perez, however, had a big hand to play. former president barack obama along with joe biden, quote, called the members, himself, to push for the labor secretary. in a sign of union, he named ellison his deputy.
