New York students will still have to take state tests this year but they’ll be taking a lot fewer of them.
Earlier this year, the state Board of Regents had asked the federal Department of Education for a waiver to allow the state to cancel third through eighth grade math and English language arts tests as well as fourth and eighth grade science tests required by federal law. The tests were canceled in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Regents wanted to cancel the tests again because of how differently teaching is being done in districts throughout the state.
