A “persistently infected survivor” of the 2013 to 2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa may have sparked the current outbreak of cases first detected in Guinea last month, genomic sequencing data has shown.
In what one expert described as “genuinely shocking” findings, researchers said that the viral sequences from both outbreaks were so similar that they must be linked.
