it comes as cranes hoisted a large pieces of the titan wreckage with cables and wires. what appears to be a panel from the exterior of the submersible, along with one of the sub s end caps. it s going to take months, anyway, to go through all these bits and pieces and thoroughly analyze all of the failures. looking at how the hatch separated, where did the first leak happen? and at these kind of pressures, when things go bad, everything s over very, very quickly. reporter: the investigation is expected to focus in part on that carbon composite construction. industry experts and a former employee had warned oceangate that that material at extreme depths could weaken with each dive. was it part of the composite shell? and taking a look at all of these different pieces to see, is there a fatigue crack, is it purely overload failure? what happened? reporter: david, the coast guard says a medical team will conduct a formal analysis of those presumed human remains.
experts have long warned the sub was not certified to dive so deep. in 2018, the chairman of a committee of 38 concerned submersible experts wrote to ceo rush asking him to adhere to our industry accepted safety guidelines and protocols for ultimate success. in 2021, discovery channel host josh gates decided against taking the sub down to the titanic for his tv show. i just felt as though the sub needed more time and needed more testing, frankly. reporter: investigators don t yet know why the sub imploded. it might have surrendered to the crushing pressure nearly 400 times what it is at sea level. perhaps a fatigue crack developed in the titanium carbon fiber shell after so many deep dives. it s hard to imagine, it s one empire state building made of lead sitting on top of you at that level. reporter: in a hauntingly cruel twist of fate, stockton rush s wife wendy lost relatives in the
an aircraft engine wosrks on principles of heat. the engine is cold and then it gets hot and you shut it down and it gets cold again. the metal is expanding and contracting, expanding and contracting, expanding and extracting, getting large ar an smaller, and that can cause pressure to the engine. we don t know what this part was. one thing we do know apparently is that it had a fatigue crack and departed the engine by virtue of centrifugal force. a lot of people watching you right now are thinking could my next aircraft be at risk? are other airlines, other planes could the same risk exist? brooke, they re all at risk. they re all at risk, brooke.
