NATO protects the medieval monastery of Decani in Kosovo

The Orthodox Christian monastery of Visoki Decani is a symbol of Serbia's religious heritage. It was founded by the Serbian king Stefan Decanski, after whom the monastery and the nearby village were named. During and after the 1999 conflict, the monastery was a refuge for people of different religious denominations. The issue of religious property is explosive in Kosovo, where some of its most important monasteries are located, some of which have become targets. The situation has worsened since the arrest in May of three Kosovo Albanian police officers.
