Work on the Farnham Street bridge over U.S. 34 gets started this week. The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that U.S. 34 would see overnight closures between Interstate 74 and Seminary Street beginning on May 19. The closures are necessary to replace a beam on the bridge. The westbound lanes will be closed between I-74 and Farnham from 10 p.m. May 19 to 6 a.m. May 20. The eastbound lanes will then be closed at Seminary Street from 10 p.m. May 20 to 6 a.m. May 21. Detours will be posted. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, the use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are also urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.
