Public Angered Over BPU Approval of Transmission Line For Wind Farm

A day after the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities approvals for the Danish energy company, Orsted, to run a transmission line through Ocean City to connect an offshore wind energy farm to a land-based power grid, the public had their say. In two separate Zoom meetings, one in the morning, Thursday, and the other in the evening, the BPU heard from the parties that would be affected, Ocean City, Cape May County, and other stakeholders. They voiced concerns that the line could disrupt an environmentally sensitive portion of Ocean City at the beach lots of 35th Street. Both Ocean City and Cape May County officials said there could be alternative routes, and it would appear that Orsted is just trying to push through the most convenient, “expedient route” for the company, without concerns for those being affected, the residents of Ocean City and the county. Ocean City Not Relenting in Battle Against Wind Farm

Barr said he is beginning to sense that the project’s developer, the Danish energy company Orsted, may be growing concerned about the money it will ultimately have to spend to build the wind farm.

Wind Farm Hot Topic in Ocean City

Wind farm officials outlined in a Zoom meeting Monday night why they want to install a transmission line under the seabed in Ocean City and bring electricity onshore through a cable at the beach lots of 35th Street. And they also heard a lot of comments from opponents of the project, as well as those in favor of the plan. The project is in the planning and permitting phase and is slated for completion by 2024.

Wind Farm Developer Seeks to Run Cable Underground in Ocean City

Orsted is putting its offshore wind farm plan in motion, despite opposition by some city leaders and residents of Ocean City. On Wednesday, the Danish energy company filed a petition with the state Board of Public Utilities to install a transmission line through Ocean City to connect the offshore turbines to a substation next to the decommissioned B.L. England Generating Station in Marmora.
