(SPRINGFIELD) In yesterday’s USDA Illinois Farm Report, it showed the average statewide temperature so far in January is 29.7 degrees, which is 5.0 degrees above normal. Meanwhile, the precipitation from around the state has so far averaged 0.99 inches, which is just over a half inch (0.52) below normal. As of this past Sunday, both the topsoil and subsoil moisture levels were at 84 percent and 75 percent adequate to surplus. The state’s winter wheat condition is rated 11 percent poor to very poor, 24 percent fair, and 65 percent good to excellent. Area farmers report over two thirds of the local wheat crop is in good condition.

I was kindof tempted to just leave the year as “2020” up above since it feels like this is all just one big continuation of it.
“Well, we planted for the first time a bunch of tomatoes,” Yost said. “We planted okra, we planted cucumbers, we planted bell peppers. We planted jalapeno peppers. We planted corn in the garden. We planted squash. You know, I didn’t know, I was like, ‘Why are we planting squash,’ and then you figure out how to make the squash casserole and you figure it out. It was great.
