i think that s important for the media to know. we have a little less amount of media in our presence like everybody. and the media should know that the president and the president-elect worked very closely together, because the president felt it was important that the president-elect liked what he was seeing and our teams worked together. our teams were really well-unified and your team was very well-unified. i was very impressed with the fact that the two presidents came together and worked out something mutually agreeable. so it s an incredible deal. it s an incredible deal for both parties. most importantly, it s an incredible deal for the workers and for the citizens of both countries. our farmers are going to be so happy. and my farmers, the farmers have stuck with me. i said we were going to do this, and mexico s promise to immediately start purchasing as much farm product as they can. they re going to work on that very hard.
don t take down your barriers, you know they call them nonmonetary barriers. they are barriers, just like charging a big tariff. they charge us many times tariff if we sent them a car, which they don t want and they practically don t take. on the assumption that he got through, they charge us many, many times what we charge them. and i said look, if you are not going to treat us fairly, our workers or farmers fairly, if you are not taking our farm products like we take your farm product, then we are going to tax all of those beautiful mercedes-benz s that are coming in and we will tax the bmws that are coming in [cheers and applause] and we are already taxing through tariffs they are steel and their aluminum. and by the way, do you see what s happening with our steel industry and the last four
you treat us that way and you don t take down your barriers, you know they call them nonmonetary barriers. they are barriers, just like charging a big tariff. they charge us many times tariff if we sent them a car, which they don t want and they practically don t take. on the assumption that it got through, they charge us many, many times what we charge them. and i said look, if you are not going to treat us fairly, our workers or farmers fairly, if you are not taking our farm products like we take your farm product, then we are going to tax all of those beautiful mercedes-benzs that are coming in and we will tax the bmws that our coming in. [cheers and applause] and we are already taxing through tariffs they are steel
just remember, we re the bank. we re the bank that everybody wants to steal from and plunder. and it can t be that way anymore. we lost $500 billion last year with china. we lost $151 billion with the european union, which puts up trade barriers so our farmers can t trade. we can t send farm product in for the most part. we want the tariffs removed. what i would like to do and what i offered at the g7, you remember. i said let s drop all tariffs and all barriers. is everybody okay with that? and nobody said yes. i said wait a minute, folks. you re complaining. no tariffs and no barriers. you re on your own. let s do it. and it was like, they couldn t leave the room fast enough. people say it s a risky business here.
that to happen and people that worked for the president. so we are going to get a lot of things straightened away. nafta is under work right now. and i think they ll be very good. you saw what i did with the tariffs, they said we don t want to pay tariffs. i said let s make a deal on nafta. and if you make a decent deal, a fair deal for the american worker, the american people, we will you ll have no problem with the tariff. i said the same thing to the european union. i said, look, you are killing us. we are losing $100 billion a years, they are not accepting our product, our farm product. i want to help the farmers and they don t accept it. i said open up your countries, that s countries, they banded together. why did they band together? to screw the united states on trade. that s okay. they are allowed. actually, here it would be called a monopoly.
