How come it missed all those problems that almost every other place in the ocean has . And the answer as we dug into it, me and my coauthor, it turns out that monterey bay had all those problems. It didnt miss them, it had them all. And 80 years ago this was a place you wouldnt want to be standing, right on this beach, doing anything because the water was polluted, the air was foul. The seals were gone, the whales were gone, the otters were gone, the abalone were gone, fishing was bad. Sardines eventually were all taken as well.
