last week when the decision was made to punt the build back better bill into next year saying the punt was happening because the negotiations were now essentially all about prig him along. manchin has enjoyed the cover of being one of at least two more conservative democrats in the senate who have had issues with this about i will and part of a larger group in the white house who have had problems with it and he is basically hung out to dry as the only member opposed to the paid family leave provisions. he is chafed a bit from the pressure. in the same radio interview you played he talked about the pressure campaign he has been under with activists and protesters trying to lean on him. i suspect that s probably the last straw with manchin. but i don t think it is the ends of this discussion. if i learned anything from covering manchin, he wants to be at middle of anything that s going on. if democrats can find a version
pass before christmas. cnn s capitol hill reporter melanie zanona standing by now. melanie, is this about changing it, trimming it back a little bit, from manchin and sinema, or is this about pushing this off? killing it? reporter: all of the above. they re not going to try to kill it, but they do want more time to consider this carefully. joe manchin is making clear that he wants serious changes made to the bill before it passes in the senate. among the concerns that he has are the paid family leave provisions, also the climate change provisions that include a methane fee. and also he has concerns generally about inflation and the cost of the bill including some of the budgetary gimmicks. there is changes that need to be made, they also will have to get a brand-new cost estimate and then whatever changes they make need to be approved by the house. clearly the likelihood of this passing by christmas is dwindling very quickly on capitol hill. you also have kyrsten sinema, another key
than is jake. i don t think they re nowhere. i do think they re about to enter joe manchin s living room for the next month, basically. and what he says is going to be what goes in this bill. pelosi is jammed here a little bit. along the way, manchin i think had hoped to have company in being opposed to the paid family leave provisions, wanting to leave that out, do it in some future bill. by putting it in the house version and getting every house democrat to vote for it but one, now it will be joe manchin to be the grinch if he chooses to do so. that will be a tough call for him. but i think the reality, if this bill does make it through the senate, does make it through joe manchin s stripping elements out of it including potentially that, and make it back to the house, you re talking about something that is too big to fail for democrats and too close to the finish line to fall apart then. i think the house will ultimately have to pass whatever joe manchin s version of the build back
the final product. there will be changes that need to be made to win over senators on the senate side. and that s because they can t afford to lose a single democrat. so, now, all eyes turn to joe manchin. that centrist from west virginia. he has concerns with the paid family leave provisions. he s also raised concerns about inflation and the long-term economic and fiscal impacts of this bill. and the other side of the spectrum, you have bernie sanders. the leading progressive. he also has issues with some of the tax provisions in the bill that would help high-income earners and he is also still fighting to expand medicare to include dental, hearing, and vision. right now, it only includes the hearing services. so, it s still a long road ahead. they are trying to wrap it up before the end of this year but i will tell you, erin, that democrats here on capitol hill are feeling pretty good about where things are. and it was certainly a celebration atmosphere today, this morning when it pa
can. and when the rest of us thought no, he can t, yes he could. so let s see how this process works itself out. it s not this is going to pass tonight. but it s far, far from a done deal. they seem to have gotten even sinema on board. we re really talking about manchin at this point. and i think actually the things that i mentioned that i talked about, i think those are going to be in the final bill. manchin s objections are in different areas, and the real issue is whether he is ultimately willing to stand alone against literally every other democrat. i was talking to tom daschle about this recently. in many of these for example, the paid family leave provisions which are probably among the post popular ideas in this, that you would get paid family leave for every worker in america. and manchin alone is going to say no to that when literally every other democrat in both xham berz may be willing to do
