Iowa lawmakers recently approved a bill introducing stricter eligibility tests for food assistance benefits, potentially causing thousands to lose access to programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, CHIP and the Family Investment Program.
If the bill is signed by Gov. Reynolds, it would restrict households with more than $15,000 in liquid assets and personal property from accessing SNAP benefits.
Republicans say the bill will ensure benefits only go to those who need them, while Democrats said deserving families could be kicked off the programs.
