Good morning. The military personals committee will come to order. I want to welcome everyone to this hearing to discuss the challenges servicemembers that are facing accessing Reproductive Health care. The Supreme Court decision in dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health organization overturned 50 years of precedent and took away the established constitutional right to an abortion. The court stated that their opinion merely returned the issue of abortion to the states, and that women can vote for whom they wish to represent their values. But servicemembers do not get to choose where they live. This leaves 230,000 servicewomen who could be ordered to a state that restricts bodily autonomy, jeopardizing our recruitment and retention efforts. There is a map of that want to show you. This map shows the states that restrict abortion in red, along with a number of military installations within those states. As you can see, many military bases are in states where abortion is or likely will be restric
Sen. Schatz good afternoon, welcome to the committees oversight hearing on volume one of the department of the interiors federal Indian Boarding School Initiative Investigative report and a legislative hearing on s2907. A bill to establish a truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School policies in the United States. The Indian Boarding School era was a dark period in our nations history and a painful example of how past federal policy failed. American indians, alaskan natives and native hawaiians. As the Department Report lays out, the federal government supported boarding schools with a primary goal in mind, the forcible assimilation of native children into western ways of life. These schools were key tools for suppressing native cultures and languages, separating native children from their families and their homelands, and indoctrinating them to, as the founder of the Carlyle School ominously said, kill the indian and save the man. They dont think they are legitimate but to say that he should have gone to the caught chris when he is care was on fire and say i wish i could tell the American People this but i cant, that doesnt seem very plausible. I would like to end with a lightning round. We have been mostly talking about the cases that we love. We almost got the privilege. What do you think will go down . Where do you think the Current Supreme Court might deal with these questions and what they recommend likely rule in favor . No. [laughter] he is highly finale or with the Supreme Court. I think the recognition is less likely today than it was in 1973. And this i think the best thing for the press is to try to keep a decision away from this court. I think unfortunately at all of rises in the post9 11 era that makes it more difficult than you will nee want to look e case that didnt involve the press versus the humanitarian project that involved Material Support to see that there can be the issues that you can see
Even if i learned about some of his strong arm tactics, some things about him that i did not necessarily like very much on a personal level, i actually came away republicking the man more, and ill tell you why because this man was not just groomed for the presidency at all, but he met with fdr, Something Like, i dont know, six or eight times, and these were just inform mall meetings. Fdr shared nothing with truman. He was a running mate because he was a consensus candidate, got ratify at the convention, and they figure, well, trumans popular in the senate, and when i was to ratify the peace treaty to end it, truman does it for me. Guess what, harry, youre on the ticket. That was it. He did not let truman into the tent on anything. You have a man who had to crash learn the most difficult office in the world in two weeks, which he did, and then amid that, hes president at the birth of the cold war at the claches of europe as they grabbed all the Eastern States and took them over to insta
