Falmouth School Board retires ‘Yachtie the Yachtsman’

Representatives of Falmouth Schools’ civil rights teams have succeeded in their effort to end the era of “Yachtie the Yachtsman.”

The School Board voted last week to officially retire both “Yachtie” and the 73-year-old “Yachtsmen” team name. The vote came after months of discussions, surveys and a presentation by students, who said a large portion of the student body felt unaffiliated with the mascot and name, which they called “snooty” and exclusionary.
The board is hopeful that there will be a new mascot for the 2021-2022 school year, according to Chairperson Whitney Bruce.
The newly reinstated affirmative action/diversity outreach coordinator position should have more autonomy and authority than what was proposed at Town Meeting, according to public feedback.
The coordinator position was approved and funded at $85,000 for salary and benefits at Annual Town Meeting in June. The coordinator will serve as a liaison between residents and government and civic organizations, and develop programs to foster broader understanding of affirmative action and race in Falmouth.
He or she will report to Town Manager Julian M. Suso and Falmouth Superintendent of Schools Lori S. Duerr.
Falmouthâs affirmative action committee presented the initial job description to the select board in October. The select board then initiated a 30-day public comment period for residents to weigh in on the scope of the position. A week later, the school committee also solicited a 30-day comment period.
