A proposal to allow motorized foot scooters to be used in downtown Sioux Falls passed to a second reading at Tuesday night s city council meeting, but several councilors expressed concerns about supporting it at a final vote.
The ordinance, sponsored by councilors Alex Jensen and Christine Erickson, would allow licensed ridesharing programs within a specific area of downtown Sioux Falls.
That area would be limited, Jensen said, because the scooters are not allowed on streets and would need to be ridden on the sidewalk. That means an area like much of Phillips Avenue, with high foot traffic and business doors swinging open, could be dangerous.
