What HBO s Fake Famous Doesn t Understand About Young People and Influencer Culture

What HBO’s Fake Famous Doesn’t Understand About Young People and Influencer Culture Time 2/4/2021 © HBO Dominique Druckman in Fake Famous “Do you want to be famous?” This is the question, posed in an open casting call, that drew thousands of young people to audition for a role in HBO’s Fake Famous. (Never mind that it is also the implied question of virtually every open casting call.) Framed, like many of the most exploitative reality-TV shows, as a social experiment, this disappointingly superficial documentary sends three strivers culled from the mass of wannabes on a quest to become successful Instagram influencers. Not only does its director, tech journalist Nick Bilton, fail to deliver fresh insight into the mechanisms of social-media celebrity, but he also ignores salient, generationally specific issues of identity and especially of economics that arise in interviews.

The tricks used by aspiring influencers to fake their way to fame

New HBO documentary  Fake Famous follows writer-director Nick Bilton as he attempts to build up three influencers It stars aspiring actress Dominique Druckman, art student Wiley Heiner, and designer Chris Bailey To build up their followings, Bilton buys them fake followers, bots that behave like real humans can be bought in batches Higher follower counts attract real followers, and hopefully paid brand sponsorships, free trips, and gifts  He also stages photoshoots in fake locations masquerading as luxe ones, like a private jet studio rented for $50/hour and a warehouse dressed up as a VIP gym
