Throwback Thursday: Poetry in Motion and Hutchinson Sewing Center
Steve Harmon
Today s installment of Throwback Thursday takes us to the northeast corner of North Main Street and East Fifth Avenue.
Dr. Horace G. Welsh owned two large homes in this block, one was his personal residence and the other he had run a hospital out of. He decided to retire from medicine around 1919 and decided to become a commercial property builder, as well as becoming the chairman of the city planning commission.
Welsh built the Mercer Hotel at 510-512 N. Main where his Hospital house was. In 1924, the other two houses nearby were razed and the corner building, 500-504 N. Main, was built.
