Dramatic images circulating on social media show the severely damaged turboprop
A Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner and Cirrus SR-22 were involved in a mid-air collision over Colorado yesterday (May 12).
The turboprop sustained extensive damage to the rear of the fuselage and empennage but was able to land safely at Centennial Airport, which is about 30 miles south of Denver International.
The pilot of the single-engine piston aircraft deployed an airframe parachute system which resulted in a safe landing in a field near the collision point.
In a statement, the NTSB said it was investigating the incident and that “no injuries [were] reported in connection with the collision and that “initial reports indicate [the] collision happened as [the] airplanes were landing.”
