coalition will be escorted by russian air and ground defenses as air targets. what does that mean? theoretically, they could shoot them down. air targets, of course, is the common term that is used for any type of radar signature that yo see when it s a hostile or unidentifi unidentified target. then they find it identified with a u.s. or coalition aircraft. they go up and go after it. it doesn t necessarily mean they will shoot it down. they are leaving themselves the option to shoot it down. that is really where there s a big danger of escalation in all of this. there s so much danger in escalation and what the words could lead to. in your view, what is the best case/worst case scenario? things continue, more less as they are. the hot line, the deconfliction
find out who those people are and punish them. reporter: that is a strong condemn anywaying of the leaks that led to this story as any we ve heard here on capitol hill. senator graham told me this reminds him of the time president obama wanted to share classified intel about air targets in syria with russia. graham said he warned about it then and he warns about it now. melissa. melissa: are democrats alleging president trump broke the law with this? reporter: none that we ve spoken to. one of the most liberal lawmakers in the senate told me his concern is not that a law may have been broken but rather that intel coming from our partners overseas may be interrupted. so that is his concern as opposed to a law being broken. we all spoke to the top democrat, senator ben carton from maryland who laid out his concerns like this. it s extremely concerning. there s a reason why information
my advice to the president, if you are going to talk to the russians about anything sensitive, run it through the system first. their view of isil is different than ours. in our view it s a dead isil fighters, in russia sometimes they want to fight them and sometime they don t. there was an effort by the obama administration to share intelligence with the russians regarding air targets. and we pushed back believing that anything you gave the russians would wind up in assad s hands. the russians clearly have a pattern of siding with whatever terrorist group they need to side with to get their objective. i don t think their objective in syria is the same as ours. i don t think the president did anything wrong. i don t know whether the story is true or not but i would caution the president when you share information with russia it will likely wind up in the wrong hands. have you surprised that so many leaks keep coming out?
