Al Sadd edge Al Rayyan in Clasico to stay unbeaten; 10-man Qatar SC hold Al Ahli

By Fawad Hussain I The Peninsula Doha: Spaniard Santiago Cazorla scored the winner as champions Al Sadd edged Al Rayyan 2-1 in a thrilling ‘Qatar Clasico’ to maintain their unbeaten streak in the QNB Stars League (QSL).  Al Rayyan despite the defeat at Al Sadd Stadium last night will keep third spot with 34 points, going into the final round after Al Ahli (33 points) and Qatar SC (32 points) played out a 1-1 draw, earlier at the same venue.  Also yesterday at the Al Ahli Stadium, Al Khor snatched a point against runners-up Al Duhail with a 1-1 draw, and are now just two points behind 10th placed Umm Salal with 16 points.

Al Sadd extended their lead on top from 11 to 13 points over second-placed reigning champions Al Duhail after they beat Al Khor 7-0 at the end of the 2020-21 season QNB Stars League’s Week 15 action, held on Tuesday and Wednesday (January 19 and 20, 2021). Rodrigo Tabata led the scoring with a hat-trick and Baghdad Bounedjah netted a double. Santiago Cazorla and Ali Asad were the other scorers as Al Sadd notched up their 13th victory to be on 41 points. In all, a total of 15 goals were scored across all fixtures. Three matches produced drawn results, and red cards were shown to three players – Ibrahim Nasser Kalla of Al Arabi, Saeed Al Hajj of Al Gharafa and Mohanad Ali (Mimi) of Al Sailiya.

The Peninsula Doha: Former champions Al Rayyan yesterday clinched a dominant 3-0 win over Al Wakrah to jump  two spots up in the standings.  At the Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium, Franck Kom (45+2 minute), Yohan Boli (62nd minute) and Shojae Khalilzadeh (90+4 minute) scored the goals for Al Rayyan, who dominated the proceedings. With the win, their seventh overall, Al Rayyan moved on to 25 points. It was Al Rayyan’s third successive win under new coach Laurent Blanc.

The Peninsula Doha: Goals from either halves helped Al Rayyan beat Qatar SC 2-1 as the Lions reduced the gap on top four sides of the QNB Stars League (QSL) at Al Sadd Stadium yesterday. Yohan Boli (45+1) and Shojae Khalilzadeh (54) were on target for Al Rayyan during the Round 14 fixture while Qatar SC’s reply came through Youcef Belaili (79). It was the sixth win of the season for Al Rayyan, now playing under coach Laurent Blanc. The Lions have 22 points, whereas Qatar SC have a tally of 23.

Fawad Hussain/ The Peninsula Feared striker Baghdad Bounedjah scored deep into the second half as Al Sadd edged arch-rivals Al Rayyan 1-0 in their traditional Qatar Clasico clash at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.  After a sensational first half performance from both the sides, Al Sadd dominated the final session with Bounedjah netting the winner in 83rd minute – once again proving his mettle following his brace in the Wolves’ 2-1 win over Al Arabi in the Amir Cup final on Friday.
