«Von den vier Halbfinalisten hat mir Italien bisher am besten gefallen. Sie haben in meinen Augen die beste Mischung an Qualitäten in der Mannschaft. Da passt sehr viel zusammen», schrieb der 60 Jahre alte ehemalige Profi in einer exklusiven Kolumne für den internationalen Dienst der Deutschen Presse-Agentur vor der heutigen Partie der Squadra Azzurra (21 Uhr/ARD und MagentaTV) in London gegen Spanien.
Erster Anwärter auf den EM-Triumph sind nach Meinung des deutschen Rekordnationalspielers jedoch die Three Lions. «Dennoch ist England für mich nun leichter Favorit auf den Titel, weil sie zu Hause spielen. Der Faktor Publikum ist gerade in der heißen Phase des Turniers nicht zu unterschätzen. Ohne den Heimvorteil der Engländer würde ich die Italiener vorne sehen.»
