breaking news as the faa, the agency, a short time ago, announcing it s ordering the temporary grounding of certain boeing 737 max nine aircrafts. operate by u.s. airline, in u.s. territories. affecting approximately 171 airplanes worldwide. the reaction is coming after a passenger on board and alaska airlines flight out of portland last night, taking this video. only in-flight for about 20 minutes. when a piece of the plane, a piece of the plane, blew out midair. the plane wall. the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing back in portland. imagine the terror on that flight when a piece of the plane wall comes out midflight. i want to bring in nbc s priscilla thompson, who s in houston for us, as well as retired faa ntsb aircraft accident investigator jeff guzzetti. priscilla, start us.
off a really frightening moment, to say the least, for passengers on board. what are we learning? yeah, yasmin. incredibly scary moments. the ntsb and faa are now investigating to figure out what exactly happened. and to ensure that it does not happen again. what we know from witnesses, and of course, that terrifying video, is that it appears that a panel on the side of the plane just blew off while it was in mid air. and you see those oxygen masks that were deployed throughout the plane, when this happened. there s also wind, very strong wind, clearly blowing in. you could see peoples hair blowing as they re attempting to make that emergency landing. one passenger said that that whole was about the size of a refrigerator. i want to play for you some sound from another passenger who was on board that plane describing the moment this happened. take a listen. we just heard like a loud bang. or like a boom. i look up, the air masks are
this terrifying video that these passengers were experiencing, how does something like this happen? what s your reaction? well, it could certainly be a very startling event. airplanes like this are supposed to come open like that. when you re climbing out. it appears that this was a door plug, a plug that normally would be in an area where the door would be located. but this particular configuration didn t require that additional emergency exit door. so they put a plug on it. and then they wallet up and it looks just like any row of any seat. not an exit row. something happened with that plug, yasmin. out of the factory floor, perhaps it wasn t properly secured. it wasn t quality controlled. and it escaped. only after about 150 flights this happened. so, i m sure the ntsb and faa are all over this. and looking at what could have
