For the sheer joy of the ritual, nothing in the world of wine beats opening a bottle of fizz. The unwinding of the wire cage, the pop of the cork (which should be a controlled, hushed “phssst”, not a bang), the sound of foaming liquid poured into a tall flute, then the sight of the bubbles streaming back up to the top and blinking in the froth. It’s a very special joy.

Singer and songwriter Nicole Scherzinger has become the latest celeb to launch a wine. Called Anti-Party, the Grenache-Syrah blend was made in partnership with Nocking Point Wines, with the name chosen to encourage people to stay at home and avoid large gatherings.The wine is being sold in packs of two for US$54.
Scherzinger said: “With the world still very much fighting coronavirus, I wanted to provide some conscientious libation while we remain in various stages of stay-at-home orders across the country. For me, red wine has always instilled a sense of connection, being in the moment and bringing people together. Over the last twelve months, whether it’s been home alone on the phone to my girls, just me and my boyfriend, or a small family gathering – there’s always been a glass of red wine in my hand.”

In honour of International Women’s Day today, we’ve rounded-up five unsung heroes of the English wine sector who are carving a path in their respective fields.

The English wine industry has a large number of women within its ranks. From CEOs and MDs such as Tamara Roberts of Ridgeview and Sam Linter of Bolney to head winemakers including Emma Rice (Hattingley Valley) Corinne Seely (Exton Park) and Cherie Spriggs (Nyetimber), women hold a variety of positions in the industry.
Here we round up five women blazing a trail in the domestic wine scene, from vineyard managers and owners to winemakers.
TEAMS at the University of Chester’s centre of excellence supporting food businesses and a leading global food and beverage company have overcome the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic to strengthen their work together. A new contract has been signed between the University’s NoWFOOD (North West Food Research Development Centre) and Danone. The signing marks the beginning of their fourth Sensory Evaluation contract, ensuring the quality of products. A fully trained panel of super tasters work specifically on the popular brand’s medical food products, led by NoWFOOD’s Sensory Panel Leader Shirley Lang and Consultant Sensory Expert Jane Clark.
