Nyako s trial stalls eight months over judge s inability to entertain matter

Daily Post Nigeria Published The trial of the former Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, has been stalled for the third time in eight months by the Federal High Court, Abuja, over the inability of the judge, Okon Abang, to hear the case. Justice Okon Abang had adjourned the matter on the last adjourned date at the instance of the court for two months. The defence and the prosecution counsel were ready to entertain the matter for the continuation of trial but Justice Abang had held that it was not convenient for the court to hear the matter. “Incidentally, it is not convenient for the court to take arguments from learned senior counsel representing the defendants on their reply on points of law today, the Judge had said.”

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it hopes to overturn the rulings that freed Orji Kalu, current Senate chief whip and Olisa Metuh, former national publicity secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from prison this year. The commission, through its monthly publication entitled ‘EFCC Alert’ listed Babachir Lawal, former secretary to the government of the federation; Adesola Amosu, former chief of air staff; Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team; Andrew Yakubu, former group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC); Babangida Aliyu, former governor of Niger state, and Winifred Oyo-Ita, former head of civil service of the federation as some of the prominent Nigerians whose corruption cases would continue in court this year.

Alleged ₦29b Fraud: Trial Of Ex-Adamawa Governor, Nyako Stalled

  The trial of a former Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako has been stalled following the adjournment of the case at the instance of the Federal High Court. At the resumed trial on Monday in Abuja, Justice Okon Abang informed the parties that the court is adjourning the trial to February 26 to enable the defendants to reply on point of law on their no-case submission. Nyako had urged the court to strike out the alleged ₦29 billion money laundering charges filed against him and others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The anti-graft agency is prosecuting the former governor alongside his son, Abdul-Aziz Nyako; two companies – Sebore Farms and Extension Ltd and Pagado fortunes Ltd. They are listed as first, second, sixth and seventh defendants.
