arthel: and also you have a republican governor from nevada saying he supports the current state of medicaid expansion and, you know, then you have dean heller there in nevada yes. arthel: saying, no, i m not going along with you. so, again, do you think majority leader mcconnell can get to 50? well, medicaid is a problem because we can t afford it, and the federal government s promise to the states they re going to continue to pay 90% of the expansion money, listen, if you get into bed with the federal government, you re not going to get a good night s sleep. [laughter] they re eventually going to renege on that promise, and the states should realize that. arthel: we had a health care expert on yesterday who, and i asked what about the notion of going to privatizing health care and health insurance. he said it s not a bad idea. he also said that if it s going to be more of a government-run plan or policy, that the states should have more input, state-by-state input. absolute
chris mentioned medicaid. i think getting rid of the pre-existing conditions will be an issue for a lot of senators. i think the medicaid the ending freezing medicaid expansion funds in 2020 may be a bigger issue. remember ohio, rob portman, took medicaid took expansion money. if people said, okay, sorry, that s it. that s a big problem. my guess is let s say they pass it today. in two weeks i bet we re talking about the medicaid expansion freeze more than the pre-existing condition provision. what is your take on that? obviously they keep it the way it is for a couple of years for political cover. but we have heard consistently from lawmakers, they throw a lot of alphabet soup at you about different ways governors can ask for the money. but at the end of the day, it is about how much money you are going to give those states in
the governors almost to a man and woman are saying we don t have the money. they heard presentations from other organizations that said if you pull the expansion money right now you re going to lose coverage. if you do tax credits instead of subsidies which a lot of republicans want to do, you will have people lose coverage, is that acceptable? well, we re going to find out. the president is concerned about coverage levels. he s going to be disappointed. republicans on the hill are less concerned with coverage levels than ensuring that people have access to coverage they want if they shoes to go and get it which is different than what obamacare does which is more of a guarentee of breerd coverage levels and the conflict here is that republican governors in states that have the medicaid expansion that go beyond the 50/50 fed state split and fully pay for the expansion into the middle class they don t want to see that roll back and not be
in every demographic. every income, every community to it treat those people rehab them and get them to work. also make sure the working poor make sense and getting all their healthcare in emergency rooms that being said, i have never been a supporter of obamacare. the reason and we refuse to run a state exchange because we didn t have the authority to make decisions. on our medicaid program it grows by less than 3%. filled with innovation that s because we run it. but the president cited medicaid expansion, governor kasich as his big success stories in obamacare. he says it doesn t get reported as such, this is a huge success story across the states accepting expansion money and he said we deserve credit for that and gave you credit for that. isn t that a little bit tricky though as a conservative because you are so great on budget tear
