England to offer more cash for promising therapies

LONDON Patients in England will soon have faster access to promising new treatments under a designated fund announced by the National Health Service Wednesday, which is expected to be launched later in the year. The Innovative Medicines Fund (IMF) will provide quick access to the latest technologies such as cell and gene therapies to treat rare diseases and is open to all therapeutic areas. Just like the National Health Service s Cancer Drugs Fund, this scheme will let highly promising new therapies qualify for NHS England funding even though the true extent of their clinical benefits is uncertain. Over a period of time, typically two years, it would allow immediate access for patients while requiring the participating company to carry out further data collection on the drug’s benefits and harms.
