over what was happening at the border, the congressional republicans froze and the president had to do an executive ord order. what was the democratic solution? to open the borders and anger the mob to keep prevent people from thinking. hope to god whatever violence springs with an angry mob waits until after the election. they want to keep in the mob angry but keep them from becoming violent. i don t think that s possible. this is a dynamic young person who overthrew someone who was in the district a long time. lost a bit of touch. this is traffic new york politics. we don t know what kind of
the impact it has on people s lives and the role and function of government is to be of the people, by the people, for the people. so that s what my hope was and let me ask you this. so you sort of had this faith that you could do something there, you could stay. ultimately it was the executive ord order on the muslim ban, or the restriction from the muslim majority countries that was a breaking point for you. you saw this and said i can t be associated with this? it was definitely one of the breaking points. i happen to be a muslim at the white house which is why, yes, the executive order banning travel of muslims from seven muslim majority countries, it impacted me in a different way which was one of the things that led me to decide i have to get out of here and especially just seeing internally how many of us didn t have a voice. the processes that once existed didn t really exist anymore but
inequality. he didn t talk about how our corporate governing laws allow the ceo s to take a larger and larger share of the corporate pie. he didn t talk about how the financial sector has preyed on the poorest americans, predatory lending, abuse of credit card practices, he was really being very conciliatory. right, as is his way. that s his sort of signature talk. and talking about important things. raising the minimum wage. that s very important, although he couldn t get it through congress. i ll have to do it by executive ord order. let me ask you this. it seems to me part of the mismatch is, when it comes down to it, inequality isn t something that can be solved by technocratic policies. it s a problem of power.
executive orders than the president has done to this date. so look, presidents have the power to use executive action. he can t legislate immigration reform through an executive ord order, for example. but he can change some regulations. so what he s saying is, i m going to go down that track, and i m going to try and do what i can do, but i m also going to try and get some things done in the congress. and, you know, i think he s playing an outside game, but then he s got to try and figure out how to play an inside game to get a few things done. so it s a very difficult needle to thread here, brianna. that s right. because he is going to say tonight, there are some things, perhaps immigration he wants to work through congress on. but let s talk about the thing we re going to hear over and over. opportunity, opportunity tonight. he ll be talking about the middle class. we ll also, i expect, to hear this from the republican rebuttal or rebuttals. how important is this issue for the fut
