Harvard University President Derek Bok established the Harvard South Africa Fellowship Program in 1979 to address the needs of South Africans denied access to advanced education by the apartheid system. The creation of this program was a direct response to the strong movement by Harvard students and faculty during the divestment campaigns of the 1970s. The Harvard South Africa Fellowship Program continues to serve as an intellectual resource for talented South Africans, with the goal of providing a “transformational experience” at Harvard University during the fellowship year.
The program was established, and is still intended, for mid-career professionals educationally disadvantaged by past laws and resource allocations in South Africa. Today, HSAFP seeks to expand its reach to institutions and organizations across South Africa in a continued effort to draw the broadest possible range of candidates for the program. Gerald Kominski, a professor of health policy and management at UCLA, told me this week that the failure of Haven leaves all hope for healthcare reform in Washington’s hands. If three of the country’s most powerful companies couldn’t remedy things, he said, “maybe it’s time to acknowledge that government intervention really is the most effective way to control costs, achieve universal access and assure equity.”
“It just goes to the fact that social difficulties and all the things that come with autism really do make a difference in getting and holding on to a job,” says lead investigator Catherine Lord, distinguished professor of psychiatry and education at the University of California, Los Angeles. The report comes as the Trump administration enters 2021 well short of its goal to vaccinate 20 million people by Jan. 1. So far, just over 17 million vaccine doses have been distributed in the U.S., but only 4.8 million people have received their first doses, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.
