america s future. reporter: but a key moderate democratic is urging his party not to rush it through. hit the pause button. let s sit back. let s see what happens. reporter: and this jobs report comes as federal unemployment benefits for about 7.5 million americans are set to expire next week. the president is pushing for an extension, but today called on states to do whatever they can to help those out of work. norah. o donnell: ed o keefe, thank you. well, a former catholic archbishop of washington pleaded not guilty today to sexual assault. ex-cardinal theodore mccarrick is charged with assaulting a 16-year-old boy at a wedding reception nearly 50 years ago. mccarrick, now 91 years old, is the only catholic cardinal ever charged with child sex crimes here in this country. today, president biden signed an executive order directing the justice department to look into declassifying some documents related to the 9/11 attacks. he did so under pressure from families of victims who
bishops took on the issue of cut accountability. chicago s archbishop outlined the principles of how the church should hose abusers responsible first and foremost, the church should be a loving and caring mother. in the end, he admitted rules are only words on paper if they are not taken seriously. sadly many of our people, not just those abused or parents of those abused, but the faithful at large, are wondering if we can with the leaders of the church, fully understand the sacred bond. at today s news conference, journalists reminded the bishops that accountability didn t work in the case of the now disgraced ex-cardinal theodore mccarrick, once the loudest voice clambering against sexual abuse and yet just last week was defrauded after investigation revealed the ears of abusing seminarians and at least. it is that kind of track record in the church that have abusers
we cannot pretend we re all in a calm dialogue when the church and the world are, in fact, in a crisis at the moment. reporter: the crisis began in august with the pennsylvania grand jury report revealing 300 predator priests and over 1,000 victims. then the scandal as ex-cardinal theodore mccaric with a long history of abusing seminarians and at least one minor, and alleging the pope knew about mccarrick s abuses. many say the sex abuse crisis will be the elephant in the room of every meeting, though some look at it not as an impediment, but an opportunity to expose and eradicate a great evil. the synod is a chance for us to talk in a positive way about how the church can make a difference, is already making a difference. it s also going to be honest, it s going to say where we ve fallen short and what can we do to move forward. reporter: the conference on youth is scheduled to last three weeks, ending on october 28th.
