Florida this morning, we are beginning to get a sense of the damage left behind by Hurricane Irma as the storm continues. Its assault on the southeast. It has weakened to a posttropical cyclone. Millions in georgia and South Carolina are without power and are cut off from their homes. In jacksonville, entire streets were swallowed by record flooding as heavy rain and storm surge hit the city t. Mayor and local authorities asked people to hang white flags outside their homes as a signal for help. Everglades city remains largely under water at this point. As of yesterday the main road in and out of Everglades City was still impactable for anything but a big truck or boat. And much of the florida keys remain cut off from the mainland this morning as the National Guard deploy search and rescue mission, Hurricane Irma made landfall in the keys sunday morning bringing 130mileperhour winds, according to department of defense, as many as 10,000 people who sided to stay and ride out the storms
Three hurricane. Only 30 miles north at 12 Miles Per Hour. We can see it is really closing in on the marco island region. The radar imagery is a very bright red area that indicate the northern high wall. They will be seen the full effects of the hurricane over the next couple hours. Also seen significant effects we continue to see gust to hurricane strength in miamidade and broward. At this point irma is at about latitude of miami n. The next couple of hours, we expect winds to turn around from southwest and we will see the wind threat to those eastern counties aside. Theres long trailing rainfall so the rainfall threat is going to continue along the east coast well into tonight into tomorrow. The greatest hazard at this point is the storm surge. Again with the system approaching naples area, 10 to 15 feet down to the southern tip of florida. Welcome back. Im Cynthia Mcfadden with continuing live coverage as Hurricane Irma pounds the entire state of florida. The storm is still a category 2 hurricane, even ten hours after making landfall. The National Hurricane center says the eye of the storm is nearing lakeland, east of tampa, as it continues its trek north. The word from city and state officials from those hunkered down at this hour, stay put. The situation is still highly fluid. At least report, the storm still had sustained winds of 100 Miles Per Hour, which has knocked out power for well more than 3 million customers and there is flooding from coast to coast as heavy rains and storm surge push water into florida cities. The river right now is going that way toward the gulf. What it should be doing is going in the opposite direct. Were getting serious winds.
