Really quickly, for some positive solution or ideas. I will mention one in particular with the federal and it could be more vocal actually. One in particular policy, sort of guidance, federal guidance that the Obama Administration put out by september which was around prohibiting profiling on the basis of race. This is something the Bush Administration have put out. In 2003. Applicant since then have been pushing toward men that guidance and make it better. So it was a mixed bag when that came out last december, on the the one hand it basically prohibited profiling by federal lawenforcement on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity and sexual orientation. So we are say no you cannot provide people on our backs. Unfortunately, the guidance left several loopholes, including a loophole in National Security. If you are National Security threat than they could profile you and they even have an example where they basically say that the fbi can commit to a commu
Fund of the naacp, which is an arm of the naacp that Thurgood Marshall founded. And so those two things are just great. And america right now is going through a whole lot of discussions about race. And i think Thurgood Marshall planted so many of the good seeds when it comes to racial equality in this country. And im a trained journalist i do like to tell stories that i like to look for stories that have never been told. Emphasis story about Thurgood Marshalls 1967 Senate Confirmation hearing have never been told that he was the first africanamerican nominated to the Supreme Court. Usually those hearings would last for hours or less. Thats a long they lasted for all of the Previous Supreme Court nominees. Thurgood marshalls hearings lasted five days, stretched across 12 days and then his nomination sat in limbo for five weeks. So theres great drama in debt. Also with these bigger than life senate figures like senator John Mcclellan of arkansas, senator sam ervin, north carolina, strom

People make a difference in life when they have ripples. And when i look around this room at the deaspera, the extended family, and i see what everybodys doing, whether its back in rhode island or whether its up in baltimore or whether its all over the country, you know, the ripples are what come from graceful passion, because graceful passion is about inspiring people to then govern and lead with that graceful passion. And i think, as i was listening last week, with the privilege of being 15 feet or so away from the pope, i couldnt help but think of senator kennedy, because i know he was in that chamber as well, and he was talking, as he listened to the message of humility and dialogue that the pope was talking about, that pope could have been talking about ted kennedy, because thats what it was about. So, i hope that young people who maybe go into that filling station of cynicism, may be going and thinking, you know what, this isnt for me i think this oral history project is as impor
World. I hope we have given that to our children. I know george w i heard him say several times his dad has given him unconditional love. That is true. All of this baloney about george competing with his father, its just ridiculous. They are devoted to each other, and there was never any competition, and my george is putty in their hands, i must confess, but i think they feel loved, and i hope if i have a legacy other than being the enforcer that it would be that i raised a great family along with george.
