you very much. tributes are still pouring in following the death of legendary tv journalist barbara walters friday at the age of 93. the trailblazing reporter broke just as many barriers behind the camera as stories she broke in front of it. here s cbs nikki battiste. reporter: a true pioneer, barbara walters was known for her poise and pointed television interviews. in our country, we read that you are unstable. reporter: with heads of state. are you 0 you didn t burn the tapes. reporter: hollywood royalty. was he the love of your life? reporter: and some of history s most memorable names. what will you tell your children when you have them? mommy made a big mistake. reporter: walters career started in 1961 as a writer on nbc s today show. i m barbara walters. reporter: she eventually left for abc, where she became the first woman ever to coanchor an evening news broadcast. and i m very pleased to be with you, harry.
you showed the president of the united states your thong underwear. where did you get the nerve? reporter: for more than five decades she was a force on television grilling everyone, from u.s. presidents are you sorry you didn t burn the tapes? yes i think so. reporter: to movie stars. this interview in which you said not the worst thing to slap a woman now and then, as i remember you said you don t do it with a clenched fist, better to do it with an open hand remember that? yeah. yeah. i bet you love that. reporter: and everybody in between. i m just a normal kid. oh, eric. you re a normal kid who killed your parents reporter: walters didn t just break barriers, she demolished them. i m barbara walters, nbc news center here in new york. reporter: in 1974 she became the first female co-host of today. two years later, abc made her the first woman to anchor an evening news broadcast. in those days nobody thought
her male co-hosts were not happy she was there and let it be known and she stayed anyway. my gosh, oh, yeah. and that s not an easy road every day to show up and feel that way and her tenacity allowed her to stay and one more thing, connie, i think you can relate to because i think all female journalists in the 70s and 80s felt this way everything she gave up. she had to make so many personal sacrifices. yes, well, we both forgot to have a baby. so she adopted and a baby and then i adopted a baby. you really do follow in her footsteps. you re not kidding. here is one more, when she was named the first female co-anchor of an evening news broadcast 20 years later, i became the second female to be named to an evening news broadcast, first at cbs but the second after barbara walters. and when i was stumped after two years, she was stumped after two years.
