The YMCA was closed for about four years when the city bought the building for $700,000 in 2012. Another $750,000 was borrowed for renovations but other than a new basketball court which has since sustained water damage the project was never completed.
The building reportedly contains mold, asbestos and other toxins and city officials for several years have determined that remediation and finishing the renovations to the pool, the plumbing and other areas of the building would be too costly.
The developer, a part of Comrie Enterprises, offered just $175,000 for the building in late 2017 but soon upped the offer to $550,000. Neither was seriously considered and the offer was nearly tripled last year.
