Solons seeks suspension of amusement tax for 2 years

Christopher de Venecia, chairman of the House Committee on Creative Industry and Performing Arts, filed House Bill No. 8428 or the proposed Film and Live Events Recovery Act to amend Section 140 (a) of Republic Act No. 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991 as amended by RA No. 9640. “While both the live events and movie industries employ around 760,000 workers, and generate no less than P100 billion per annum for the national economy, with local governments taking a piece of that pie, it is important to evaluate the amusement tax in light of COVID-19,” he said. 

Solons urge annual funding for training of Filipino scientists abroad

Mark Go approved House Resolution No. 1380 seeking to allocate annual funding for the scholarship and training of Filipinos abroad.  It was Deputy Speaker and Sorsogon 1st District Rep.  Evelina Escudero who moved for the approval of Nograles’ resolution. In the two-page resolution, Nograles, a Harvard-trained lawyer, laments that the government currently lacks a coherent strategy on how to send Filipinos to study abroad in order to contribute to the country’s collective know-how. “In order for the country to truly develop into upper-middle income country,  the government should take the initiative and fund the foreign training of our Filipino graduates. This is because this foreign training is an investment in producing our own experts and towards the development of our economy,” he said. 

House moves to institutionalize new Filipino gesture of greeting

(MANILA BULLETIN) Authored by Marikina City Rep. Bayani Fernando, House Bill 8149 or the Bating Filipino Act received 212 “yes” votes against the lone “no” and single abstention. Even before the bill’s approval in the Lower House, Fernando has started to campaign for the public to adopt the new way of showing friendship, respect and goodwill to each other.

House panel OKs resolution commemorating 500th anniversary of PH part in circumnavigation of the world

Published January 16, 2021, 12:52 PM The House Committee on Basic Education and Culture has approved a resolution seeking to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Philippines’ part in the first circumnavigation of the world on the island of Homonhon on March 17, 1521.  House Resolution No. 1403, principally authored by Eastern Samar Rep. Maria Fe Abunda, gained the nod of the House panel, chaired by Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo. House Deputy Speaker Sorsogon  Rep. Evelina Escudero moved for the approval of Abunda’s resolution. Abunda noted that the first circumnavigation of the world in Homonhon Island 500 years ago is “the beginning of one of the most important historical events in the life of the Philippines.”
