Another edition of The Outlook and another Utah storm. It is starting to feel like clockwork – which wasn’t the case early on in this season. As a matter of fact, earlier this season in this column’s infancy I was secretly harboring suspicions that perhaps this column itself was bringing bad juju.
Park City experienced a truly special weather phenomenon on Thursday of last week. We had just the right amount of moisture, cold air, and west-northwest surface flow to generate a period of intense snowfall during the evening hours.
The end of January, from a statistical point of view, marks the halfway point of the season for Utah’s snowpack. In the highest elevations, we typically see half our snow before the end of January – with roughly half of it falling after. Because of this, it is one of my favorite times to dig into the stats to see where we stand.
