It can seem to take the sinuous sculptures of Indian temples and animate them, deepening the bends in motion, pressing more beauty from the poses. In recent decades, much of the best Odissi has come from Nrityagram, a company with its own dance village in southern India near Bangalore. A few years ago, the company’s star dancer, Bijayini Satpathy, broke off on her own to try her hand at solo work and choreography.
