here the broader goal to make the russian invasion a strategic failure for vladimir putin and now the question is will those sanctions change his calculus and secondly, what more can we expect? we saw the european union sanctioning putin himself and sanctioning putin on the table. what more can they do? thank you very much, jeremy. in announcing another round of sanctions against moscow, he vowed to make putin, quote, a pariah. other world leaders taking action against russia as well but there are real questions about the impact of these sanctions and also how much further the west is willing to go. cnn s kylie atwood is live at the state department for us. kylie, what more could be coming? reporter: looking at what the eu did today is great because the biden administration said they ll act alongside european part partners when it comes to
gotten a readout from the white house about that meeting but the goal was very clear, it s to continue to try to show this united front from the united states and its nato allies. from the west, really, as a whole and its efforts to not only punish putin for this invasion of ukraine, but to try and make him, as president biden said yesterday, a pariah in the international community. we saw yesterday, president biden issuing a series of severe and significant sanctions, more far reaching than what we had seen from the united states after russia s invasion of crimea in 2014, but there are still major questions about what more the united states and europe can do to not only punish russia befor this behavior but whether these sanctions can actually change putin s calculus going forward and make him retreat from this on going invasion of ukraine. we heard president biden yesterday saying he still believed these sanctions will affect putin s calculus and could change his behavior but it will
telling congress, in fact, we are going to make sure it happens. general, i m very interested in your take on this. how hard is it to supply arms to ukraine right now because we know from the pentagon, they send 7,000 additional troops to bolster nato allies, in the neighboring nations to ukraine. but what more can the u.s. be sending and doing in realtime right now? well, it s been a lot of talk around washington and some people talking about fueling an insurgency against the russian occupation, and that means sending weapons and so forth. that means you re confronting russia, but this has been the basic stumbling block in the administration policy and in nato policy. we don t want to confront russia. now, a couple of days ago, putin made a speech and he warned us of unimaginable consequences if someone intervened.
what do you think it means? it recognizes, the kremlin recognition that killing ukrainian civilians, it is ominous and cynical. let s talk about kyiv, general carr because you were just discussing, that s the real problem, that s the real danger. i heard general ben hodges earlier today laying out how dangerous an urban fight would be right now and the way he said, look no further than iraq to note. how bad do you think a fight in kyiv could get and what people should be preparing for? i think first that putin does want this fight. he welcomes a chance to demonstrate russia s combat power and punish and kill the ukrainian people. this is what s behind this talk about the nazis. he wants to show his combat
system called s.w.i.f.t. where russians work or are able to send their money throughout the world, if we need european allies to go along with that, that s an option too but putin has to fail. kate, we have to build a sentiment in the united states that people care. the challenge for president biden to do that is you have the former president typically in a crisis like this, everyone coming together, the former president is cheering for the russians and no republican leader can really stand up against him and so you have a country that s divided on what we should to. but one president at a time. we know what president biden though is doing and i have to ask you, on the what more can the united states do or should the united states do, we know that from president zelenskyy on down in ukraine, they want military hardware, they want reinforcements, they say they ve got the people, they don t have the weapons to defend off russia. i was just talking to general wesley clark and he said on
