Hospital bosses admit lack of oversight of radiation services
Damning HIQA report highlights safety issues at regional facility
Managers at a regional hospital accepted there was there was a lack of formal governance and oversight of its radiation services, following a damning inspection by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA).
Kilcreene Orthopaedic Hospital, Kilkenny, provides orthopaedic radiography, including fixed computed radiography, mobile digital radiography and digital fluoroscopy.
But HIQA found evidence of non-compliance to eight of the regulations covering the conduct of medical exposures when the watchdog’s inspectors visited the facility last November.
“Arrangements for the clear allocation of responsibility for the protection of service users from medical exposure to ionising radiation must be implemented by the Health Service Executive as a matter of urgency,” the inspectors noted in a report which was published on HIQA’s website.
